Choosing the Right Grille Gate for Your Hong Kong Flat

Walk through any residential corridor in Hong Kong and you will notice that nearly every front door has a secondary gate — a metal grille that sits in front of the main door. These grille gates provide an extra layer of security and allow residents to open the main door for ventilation while keeping the flat secure. In Hong Kong's humid climate, cross-ventilation is a practical necessity, especially in older buildings without central air conditioning.

Types of Grille Gates

1. Sliding Grille Gates (趟閘)

Sliding gates move horizontally along a top and bottom track. They are the most popular choice because they do not swing outward into the corridor — important where fire regulations prohibit obstructions. A standard sliding grille gate (approximately 850mm wide) costs HK$3,500 to HK$7,000 installed. Their slim profile when open means they stack neatly to one side. The bottom track can collect dirt and requires regular cleaning.

2. Folding Grille Gates (摺閘)

Folding gates consist of interconnected vertical bars that fold concertina-style. Good for wider openings where a single sliding panel would be too heavy. Common in older public housing and tong lau buildings, costing HK$3,000 to HK$6,000. They tend to be bulkier when folded and can become stiff without regular lubrication.

3. Scissor Gates (剪刀閘)

Scissor gates use a diamond-pattern lattice that expands and collapses. Less common now in homes due to their industrial look, but still popular for shop fronts. They offer excellent security but limited aesthetic appeal.

Materials and Finishes

  • Mild steel (鐵閘) — Most affordable. Requires powder coating or painting to prevent rust. Regular touch-up of scratches is advisable, especially in humid summer months.
  • Stainless steel (不鏽鋼閘) — Virtually maintenance-free. 304 grade is standard for residential use. Expect to pay 40–60% more than mild steel.
  • Aluminium (鋁閘) — Lightweight and corrosion-resistant, available in many colours through anodising. However, softer than steel and offers slightly less resistance to forced entry.

Lock Mechanisms

  • Standard cylinder locks — Basic key-operated locks. Insist on at least a C-grade cylinder for adequate pick resistance.
  • Deadbolt locks (鎖膽) — Stronger resistance against forced entry. Look for reputable brands from Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Japan.
  • Smart locks — Options include keypad, fingerprint, and card access, ranging from HK$1,500 to HK$5,000. Ensure there is a backup physical key for battery failure.

Child Safety Considerations

If you have young children, grille gate safety is critical. Hong Kong sees several incidents each year where children trap their heads between gate bars. Key safety measures:

  • Bar spacing — Gaps should be either less than 85mm (too narrow for a child's head) or greater than 230mm. The dangerous range is 85–120mm.
  • Avoid horizontal bars — Children climb them like a ladder. Vertical-only designs are safer.
  • Finger-trap guards — Folding gates have pinch points. Look for models with rubber bumpers at folding joints.
  • Auto-locking — Prevents children from opening the gate and wandering into the corridor unsupervised.

Installation and Maintenance

Measure your door frame carefully — Hong Kong building standards are not uniform, especially in older buildings. The installer will typically visit for precise measurements before fabrication. Check with your building management about regulations on gate styles or colours. Housing Authority estates have specific approved gate specifications.

Installation takes 2–3 hours with drilling into the door frame and wall. The installer should use concrete anchors for reinforced concrete frames and toggle bolts for hollow block walls.

For ongoing maintenance: clean the bottom track monthly, apply silicone spray to rollers every 3–6 months, tighten screws annually, lubricate the lock with graphite powder (not oil), and touch up rust spots on steel gates promptly.
